3 Reasons To Choose A Compact Crossover For Your Next Car

April Sims

If you're looking for lots of cargo space and an easy-to-access cargo area, it's hard to beat crossovers, hatchbacks, and station wagons. Deciding between these options isn't always easy, especially since they each have unique advantages. However, compact crossovers such as the Ford Escape can be an excellent choice for many families.

While no vehicle will be perfect for every person or every budget, here are three compelling reasons why a compact crossover might be right for you.

1. Car-Like Handling

"Crossover" may seem like the latest automotive marketing term, but it's a relatively important distinction. While many crossovers (sometimes called CUVs) look similar to traditional SUVs, they share a different heritage. Unlike SUVs built on truck platforms, CUVs trace their lineage back to traditional car platforms.

As a result, most CUVs offer far superior handling and road manners compared to bulkier SUVs. This design means that driving a CUV feels like driving a sedan or hatchback, with a better road feel and more precise steering than truck-based vehicles. If you're looking for something with SUV characteristics that doesn't drive like a tank, a CUV might be an excellent choice.

2. Easier Access

While crossovers share many mechanical underpinnings with sedans and hatchbacks, there are also some notable differences. In particular, crossovers use an SUV-like body with an increased ride height. These features make access much easier since stepping down into a low-to-the-ground cabin is not necessary.

Crossovers also make cargo access significantly easier than an equivalent hatchback or station wagon. Since the cargo area is higher off the ground, you don't need to reach down when loading groceries or equipment into the hatch. This easier cargo access can be particularly beneficial if frequently reaching down for items is uncomfortable for you.

3. Better Ground Clearance

The taller ride height on crossovers is good for more than just providing easy and comfortable access. Since the vehicle sits higher, you'll also have more ground clearance between the underbody and the road. Improved ride height can be useful in many situations, such as when traveling over snow-covered roads or dealing with poorly maintained streets.

However, since CUVs still have much in common with cars, this higher ground clearance tends to be less extreme than with many taller trucks. In other words, you can enjoy the benefits of a higher vehicle without drawbacks such as a much higher center of gravity or difficulty stepping into the cockpit.
